Camp Recharge at Lions Village Licola |
The Lions Club of Park Orchards in conjunction with Lions Clubs of Forest Hill, Box Hill, South Vermont and Vermont, and combined with Interchange Inner East, facilitate special needs family camps at Lions Village Licola.
The inaugural Camp Recharge special needs family camp was held in March 2016 with a second camp in March 2017. The camp was provided for families with children on the Autism Spectrum. Most children who attended had been diagnosed with significant intellectual disabilities. The family atmosphere was maintained as much as possible with siblings also invited to attend Camp Recharge. Camp Recharge at Licola is a great opportunity for parents to relax. They are able to have time out while their children are placed with professional carers for several hours at a time. At the most recent camp, it was noted that one of the carers on the camp was a young man who had previously been a student at Park Orchards Primary School and while there had been a recipient of the club’s community spirit award and clearly with these attributes, had carried on to contribute back to the community. It was also noted that there was a significant difference in mental state of all who attended the camp from the time of arrival through to the Sunday with the following anecdote from one parent who stated that because the camp had entertained and worn the kids out, it was first time in years that this parent had two great uninterrupted nights’ sleep. The Lions Club of Park Orchards thanks the Warrandyte Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank as a major sponsor of this event.
